Ever since I became a model, at a very young age, I have heard the term “body goals”. The girls have been saying that to each other in the dressing rooms and on castings.

However, I never fully understood what they were talking about – the concept of having a body that is “goals” seemed so foreign to me. I never understood how one body type could be viewed as the ultimate perfection, as “conventionally attractive”, and others as bodies that need to be modified to fit a standard.

Now, at the age of 25, I can positively say I will never use the term “body goals” and I want to encourage you to stop using it, too.

Did you know that, according to the American Communication Journal, there is a significant link between women’s body dissatisfaction and the media’s effect on body confidence?

This is because the media defines what the perfect body is and teaches us to use the term whenever we feel less confident. Not to mention, as a desire for the idealized body type grows, Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) comes into increasing conflict with body goals.

So, stop falling into a pit of obsessive workouts and unhealthy routines to obtain the unattainable. Nurture your body and aim for a healthy lifestyle and work out in moderation. If you want, make reasonable body goals, and have the right mentality to achieve them.
